Historic cottages · Arts scene · Beach town
A real beach town with a real downtown: 1920s cottages, an arts scene along Lake and Lucerne avenues, a public beach with its own casino building, and the Intracoastal at the end of the street.
Lake Worth Beach (the city added "Beach" to its name in 2019) sits directly south of West Palm Beach on the Intracoastal, with its own bridge to a public beach and the landmark Lake Worth Casino building. Downtown, along Lake Avenue and Lucerne Avenue, is a walkable stretch of restaurants, bars, galleries and the Lake Worth Playhouse.
The housing is what makes it distinct: a large stock of 1920s and 30s cottages and bungalows in historic districts like Parrot Cove, College Park and Mango Groves, many renovated with care. It attracts artists, professionals who work in West Palm, and buyers who want coastal character without Palm Beach or Delray pricing.
Historic cottages and bungalows on tree-lined streets — the kind of housing stock that does not exist in most of the county.
Downtown, the Intracoastal, Bryant Park and the beach are all reachable on foot or by bike from the historic neighborhoods.
Still more attainable than the coastal towns to the north and south for a comparable location.
The best-known historic district, between downtown and the Intracoastal. Restored cottages, mature trees and a strong neighborhood identity. The premium address in the city.
Historic neighborhood north of downtown with a similar cottage stock and a slightly quieter feel. Frequently the answer when Parrot Cove is out of budget.
The southern historic neighborhoods, close to the Intracoastal park and the bridge to the beach. A mix of restored and original-condition homes.
Condos and townhomes above and around the Lake and Lucerne avenue corridor for buyers who want to walk to everything.
Historic homes need a historic inspection: original electrical, plumbing, foundations and roofs on hundred-year-old houses vary wildly. We use inspectors who specialize in this stock.
Insurance on older homes is the number to run first. The four-point inspection decides it, and a recently updated home can be a completely different proposition from an original one on the same street.
The historic districts have design guidelines. Before you plan exterior changes or an addition, we check what the city allows.
The historic neighborhoods and downtown are among the most walkable areas in the county. Downtown, Bryant Park and the Intracoastal are within a few blocks of Parrot Cove, and the beach is a short ride over the bridge.
Mostly 1920s to 1950s cottages, bungalows and small Mediterranean Revival homes in the historic districts, with condos downtown and more conventional mid-century homes on the western side of the city.
Delray's Atlantic Avenue is larger and more polished, and its coastal neighborhoods are priced well above Lake Worth Beach. Lake Worth Beach is smaller, more eclectic and generally more attainable for a comparable walk-to-downtown location.
